Q & A with Liba Freund
You first encountered Hillel at RCC. Please tell us a little bit about your RCC experience.
I started at RCC shortly after moving to NY from California. I liked RCC a lot, it’s a great school. I didn’t really know anyone. I met Rabbi Oliver on my first day when I was searching desperately for my ceramics classroom. He kindly walked me to my class, and from that day forward, I felt I had a friend.
What was one of your favorite Hillel events?
One of my recent favorites was an outdoor movie night in the Olivers’ backyard this past summer. With all the pressure of COVID, it was just such a nice time. We set up blankets and pillows. It was a beautiful night beneath the stars.
Word has spread of your legendary Thanksgiving turkey, can you share the recipe?
For the past two years I’ve spent Thanksgiving with Hillel and the Olivers, and we hope to make it a long-standing tradition. Regarding my turkey recipe, the secret ingredient is: love.
How has Hillel affected your life?
Hillel has brought so much positivity and light to me and my family. It has really given me a genuine community here in Rockland. Even now that my husband Chuny and I are parents, we still consider Hillel to be our main connection to Jewish life. I’m grateful for all Hillel does and especially for Rabbi Oliver for officiating at our wedding!
At how many different locations have you celebrated Shabbat with the Olivers?
That would have to be close to 15! That includes many locations in Manhattan, upstate New York, Rockland, and even Guatemala!
