Q & A with Shlomo Hendler, RCC Class of 2018
When you first came to RCC had you heard of Hillel?
Yes, before I started my educational journey at RCC, my sister told me to check out all the great things Hillel had to offer.
What was your best Hillel experience?
I loved the constant experience of Jews from all different backgrounds getting together, which is contrary to what you might experience elsewhere. The off-campus Shabbatons were also a great way for us to connect and have a great time.
You’re known to be very fashionable, how would you describe your style?
I try to incorporate comfort and color in the things I wear.
Where did you transfer to and what are you studying?
I transferred to Columbia University and I plan to declare my major in financial economics.
What did you do over the summer, anything interesting ?
I visited a couple of cities in Spain, Italy, and France. I did some scuba diving in the Mediterranean, and dove through some caves, and witnessed G-d’s beautiful creations. If you’ve never been scuba diving, I encourage you to go. There is a whole world waiting for you to explore. I also went skydiving.
The word on the town is that you’re quite the dancer and busted out the moves this past Purim. Is pursuing this talent a career option?
While I don’t plan to pursue a career in dance, it’s definitely something I would like to continue doing when the occasion arises. I took Latin dance at RCC and I might take a dance class at Columbia.
Falafel or Shwarma?
Falafel
Starbucks or Dunkins?
Starbucks
Do you have a pet?
Thor, my Red Toy Poodle, is arguably the cutest dog in the world. I’m not just saying that because he’s my pet, if you ask someone who met him, I think they would agree.
Words of wisdom for new students this semester?
I came to RCC with a very poor secular educational background. One thing I did have was a goal - to get into Columbia. I joined the Honors Program and I worked very hard to improve my skills. I wasn’t ashamed to use the Tutoring Center, in fact I was there almost every day. I also was very involved with Hillel and the Friends of Israel Club, which gave me a good balance between my studies and being social. If you want to succeed, set a goal and work towards it, and make sure to have fun at the same time!
